Hadith of the Day – July 2

The difference between a believer and an unbeliever is whether he/she says his/her prayers or not

Sahih Muslim Book 1 #147

Full Hadith

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Zubair that he heard Jabir bin ‘Abdullah saying, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) say:
“Between man and polytheism and unbelief is the abandonment of salat.”

Lesson

The most important lesson to take from this hadith is that prayer should be observed with care. Missing prayers is such a grave sin, to the extent that the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has clearly stated that prayer is what distinguishes a believer from an unbeliever. Therefore, we should pray properly and on the right time.

Hadith of the Day – July 1

“Eat and drink with the right hand – Satan eats and drinks with left hand.”

 Sunan Abi Dawud 3776

Full Hadith

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Prophet(ﷺ) say
“When any of you eats, he should eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, he should drink with his right hand, for the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.”

Lesson

We should eat with our right hand to oppose the actions of Shaitaan. It is mentioned in another Hadith that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Mention the Name of Allah and eat of the dish what is nearer to you” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5378). This way, we will bot only oppose Shaitaan’s actions; we will also get the reward for adhering to the Prophet ﷺ’s advice.

Hadith of the Day – June 30

“If something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then Allah will say: ‘Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshiper?’ So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed.”

Huraith bin Qabisah narrated:
“I arrived in Al-Madinah and said: ‘O Allah! Facilitate me to be in a righteous gathering.'” He said: “I sat with Abu Hurairah and said: ‘Indeed I asked Allah to provide me with a righteous gathering. So narrate a hadith to me which you heard from Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) so that perhaps Allah would cause me to benefit from it.’ He said: ‘I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) say: “Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost. So if something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then the Lord, Mighty and Sublime says: ‘Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshipper?’ So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated like that.

Lesson

From this Hadith, we learn the importance of praying Nafl (optional) prayers. If we make a mistake while praying the Fard (obligatory) prayer, our optional prayers can fill in the gaps. We should try our best to pray as many optional prayers as we can.

Hadith of the Day – June 29

“Your Islam is good when you greet those you know and those you do not know.”

Saheeh Bukhari 28

Full Hadith

Abdullah ibn Amr narrated:
A person asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) . “What (sort of) deeds in or (what qualities of) Islam are good?” He replied, “To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you don’t know.”
(Hadith Saheeh Bukhari 28)

Lessons

The main objective of this Hadith is to signify the importance of greeting one another. There is another Hadith with similar meaning, saying that the one who greets another Muslim first gets more reward than the one who replies.

Another important note to take is that we should greet the people we know and those we don’t know. One of the reasons of doing so is that it emits any hatred or jealousy between the two, since when someone makes Salam, they are giving a Dua to the other.
