Hadith of the Day – July 13

Flower Dandy

Two blessings which you may lose — health and free time

Sahih al-Bukhari 6412


Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا الْمَكِّيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ـ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ـ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good.”


Lesson

We should use our health for good deeds to its fullest extent before old age interferes. Also, we should use our time wisely before our death interferes.

Hadith of the Day – July 12

Charity does not decrease wealth

Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ، وَابْنُ، حُجْرٍ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، – وَهُوَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ – عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ وَمَا زَادَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا بِعَفْوٍ إِلاَّ عِزًّا وَمَا تَوَاضَعَ أَحَدٌ لِلَّهِ إِلاَّ رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Abu Hurayrah reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying:
“Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).”


Lessons

We should give as much charity as we can. Most people believe that giving charity lessens the amount of money, but really, it does the opposite. In another Hadith, it is said that charity is multiplied ten-fold. Hence, we should never stop giving Sadaqah.

Ayah of the Day – July 11

The most beloved to me amongst you is the one who has the best character and manners

Full Hadith

وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) neither talked in an insulting manner nor did he ever speak evil intentionally. He used to say, “The most beloved to me amongst you is the one who has the best character and manners.” He added, ” Learn the Qur’an from (any of these) four persons. `Abdullah bin Mas`ud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai bin Ka`b, and Mu`adh bin Jabal.”


Lesson

It is important for us as Muslims to have the BEST character possible. Who doesn’t want to be among the most beloved of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam!?

Hadith of the Day – July 10

Flower Dandy

If you wrong your brother, seek his pardon before he dies. In the Hereafter, payment will be made by deeds. If you have no good deeds to pay with, then some of his bad deeds will be added to yours.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6534


Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ مَنْ كَانَتْ عِنْدَهُ مَظْلَمَةٌ لأَخِيهِ فَلْيَتَحَلَّلْهُ مِنْهَا، فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ ثَمَّ دِينَارٌ وَلاَ دِرْهَمٌ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يُؤْخَذَ لأَخِيهِ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ حَسَنَاتٌ أُخِذَ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِ أَخِيهِ، فَطُرِحَتْ عَلَيْهِ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Hurayrah:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever has wronged his brother, should ask for his pardon (before his death), as (in the Hereafter) there will be neither a Dinar nor a Dirham. (He should secure pardon in this life) before some of his good deeds are taken and paid to his brother, or, if he has done no good deeds, some of the bad deeds of his brother are taken to be loaded on him (in the Hereafter).”


Lesson

We should always forgive our brothers/sisters of Islam. We never know when our last moment is going to be with them, and we surely do not want it to be a regretful one. Hence, we should not argue with our brothers/sisters; instead, forgive and forget!

Hadith of the Day – July 9

Flower Dandy

A dirham given as charity during lifetime is better than one hundred dirhams given at death

Sunan Abi Dawud 2860


Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ شُرَحْبِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ لأَنْ يَتَصَدَّقَ الْمَرْءُ فِي حَيَاتِهِ بِدِرْهَمٍ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَتَصَدَّقَ بِمِائَةٍ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Narrated AbuSa’id al-Khudri:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: A man giving a dirham as sadaqah (charity) during his life is better than giving one hundred dirhams as sadaqah (charity) at the moment of his death.


Lesson

We should give as much charity as we can during our lifetime, to please Allah SWT and the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Hadith of the Day – July 8

Flower Dandy

It is not lawful to desert your brother for more than three nights

Sahih al-Bukhari 6076


Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ لاَ تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلاَ تَحَاسَدُوا، وَلاَ تَدَابَرُوا، وَكُونُوا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ إِخْوَانًا، وَلاَ يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلاَثِ لَيَالٍ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Do not hate one another, nor be jealous of one another; and do not desert one another, but O Allah’s worshipers! Be Brothers! And it is unlawful for a Muslim to desert his brother Muslim (and not to talk to him) for more than three nights.“


Lesson

This Hadith explains the importance of forgiving and forgetting. If one’s brother/sister does something rude, one should not abandon them for longer than three nights; instead, he/she should forgive them, forget the deed, and continue life with them.

Ayah of the Day – July 7

Flower Dandy

Spend in the way of Allah and do not put yourselves into destruction, and do good. Indeed, Allah loves those who do good.

Quran 2: 195


Full Ayah

وَأَنفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

Allah says in Surah Baqarah Ayah 195:
“Spend in the way of Allah and do not put yourselves into destruction, and do good. Indeed, Allah loves those who do good.”


Lesson

Allah stresses the importance of giving charity in this Ayah. Giving Zakah/Sadaqah brings goodness to oneself; these actions are a means of protecting ourselves from sin and hardships. Hence, we should all strive to do good deeds, for “Indeed, Allah loves those who do good“

Hadith of the Day – July 6

Flower Dandy

When someone enters his house without saying “Bismillah”, Satan says he has found a place to spend the night

Sahih Muslim 5006


Full Hadith

وعن جابر، رضى الله عنه قال‏:‏ سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول‏:‏ ‏ “‏إذا دخل الرجل بيته، فذكر الله تعالى عند دخوله وعند طعامه، قال الشيطان لأصحابه‏:‏ لا مبيت لكم ولا عشاء، وإذا دخل ، فلم يذكر الله تعالى عند دخوله، قال الشيطان‏:‏ أدركتم المبيت؛ وإذا لم يذكر الله تعالى عند طعامه قال‏:‏ أدركتم المبيت والعشاء‏“‏))

Jabir bin ‘Abdullah reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying:
“When a person enters his house and mentions the name of Allah at the time of entering it and while eating the food, Satan says (addressing himself: You have no place to spend the night and no evening meal; but when he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, the Satan says: You have found a place to spend the night, and when he does not mention the name of Allah while eating food, he (the Satan) says: You have found a place to spend the night and evening meal.”


Lesson

We should enter the house saying Bismillah (In the name of Allah). Who wants Shaitaan to stay in their house? There are many blessings and virtues of saying Bismillah, one of them being that Shaitaan hates those words, thus avoiding any place where these words are said.

Hadith of the Day – July 5

Give in charity from honestly earned money

Full Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُنِيرٍ، سَمِعَ أَبَا النَّضْرِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ـ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ـ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ مَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِعَدْلِ تَمْرَةٍ مِنْ كَسْبٍ طَيِّبٍ ـ وَلاَ يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ إِلاَّ الطَّيِّبَ ـ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَتَقَبَّلُهَا بِيَمِينِهِ، ثُمَّ يُرَبِّيهَا لِصَاحِبِهِ كَمَا يُرَبِّي أَحَدُكُمْ فَلُوَّهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْجَبَلِ ‏”‏‏.‏

Narrated Abu Hurayrah:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If one give in charity what equals one date-fruit from the honestly earned money and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money –Allah takes it in His right (hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much s that it becomes as big as a mountain.”


Lesson

We should always give charity from lawful and honest money. There is no benefit in giving Sadaqah from unlawful — Haraam — money since it is unlawful. Giving unlawful money for something good gives no value to the action.

Hadith of the Day – July 4

Flower Dandy

The first thing to purify is the abdomen, so eat Halal food.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنِ طَرِيفٍ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ صَفْوَانَ وَجُنْدَبًا وَأَصْحَابَهُ وَهْوَ يُوصِيهِمْ فَقَالُوا هَلْ سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم شَيْئًا قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ ‏”‏ مَنْ سَمَّعَ سَمَّعَ اللَّهُ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ـ قَالَ ـ وَمَنْ يُشَاقِقْ يَشْقُقِ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏”‏‏.‏ فَقَالُوا أَوْصِنَا‏.‏ فَقَالَ‏”‏ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُنْتِنُ مِنَ الإِنْسَانِ بَطْنُهُ، فَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ لاَ يَأْكُلَ إِلاَّ طَيِّبًا فَلْيَفْعَلْ، وَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ لاَ يُحَالَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجَنَّةِ بِمِلْءِ كَفِّهِ مِنْ دَمٍ أَهْرَاقَهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ ‏”‏‏.‏ قُلْتُ لأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَنْ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم جُنْدَبٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ جُنْدَبٌ‏.‏

Narrated Tarif Abi Tamima:
I saw Safwan and Jundab and Safwan’s companions when Jundab was advising. They said, “Did you hear something from Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” Jundab said, “I heard him saying, ‘Whoever does a good deed in order to show off, Allah will expose his intentions on the Day of Resurrection (before the people), and whoever puts the people into difficulties, Allah will put him into difficulties on the Day of Resurrection.'” The people said (to Jundab), “Advise us.” He said, “The first thing of the human body to purify is the `Abdomen, so he who can eat nothing but good food (Halal and earned lawfully) should do so, and he who does as much as he can that nothing intervene between him and Paradise by not shedding even a handful of blood, (i.e. murdering) should do so.”


Lesson

As dutiful Muslims, we should decide what we eat with caution. If a food is doubtful, it is better not to eat it since there’s a possibility of it being haram. It is said that when someone eats something haram, their prayers are not accepted for 40 days, thus emphasizing the significance of being 100% sure that what we eat is halal.
